In the face of increasing growth it is time to allow adult-use cannabis businesses in Fergus County

In November 2020 Montanans loudly proclaimed their support for adult-use cannabis by voting nearly 60% for ballot initiative I-190. In 2021 the state legislature restricted counties that did not vote at least 50% for the measure from participating in revenue generation through the operation of adult-use cannabis businesses. With 2 years to look at the data it is clear that Fergus County is missing out.

In the coming years Fergus County will continue to grow. Our schools, law-enforcement and infrastructure will all need additional resources to help maintain or expand these services. By 2030 incoming German company Vacom (Vacom is coming to Lewistown) intends to have 500 new employees, if you include family members in that we could see an increase of 1500 to 2000 new residents in Fergus County.

Taxes on cannabis are voluntary taxes. Cannabis businesses all pay taxes and when the end product finally makes its way to the retailers the consumer also pays a 20% tax. By allowing cannabis businesses to thrive in Fergus County and contribute tax revenue to the state and county means you could pay less in taxes and it will never make you pay more in taxes that are not voluntary.
